California Chicken Cafe | Olo Case Study

California Chicken Cafe Brings Its Brand to Life—and Grows Online Orders 114%—with Olo Serve

California Chicken Cafe has served Los Angeles since 1991 and is known for its rotisserie chicken, oversized salads, and scratch-made everything. For a brand that treats presentation as seriously as flavor, an ordering site had to look and feel like the restaurant itself—not a generic template. After moving to Olo Serve, it found a partner that could highlight the brand’s specific visual identity while providing a reliable, easy-to-use foundation for online ordering.

California Chicken Cafe | Olo Case Study

Background

Before Olo, California Chicken Cafe ran its ordering site on a provider that offered front-end flexibility, but lacked the stability the growing brand needed. Address verification for catering deliveries was unreliable and sometimes failed to recognize valid business addresses. A legacy payment integration caused intermittent issues. And after an acquisition, its back end split across two separate admin consoles, complicating day-to-day management. High turnover at the company also made it harder for California Chicken Cafe to build a long-term relationship with the platform.

The brand’s VP of Technology was familiar with Olo’s ability to provide a sturdy digital foundation from a previous role, and he was impressed by new Serve features that gave the brand more power over customizing how its menu looked. Onboarding was seamless, and Olo has continued rolling out more self-service UI features, which the brand has used to build a detail-oriented guest experience.

Results with Olo

01

Every detail, on-brand

With Serve, the brand created an ordering experience totally unique to California Chicken Cafe. Modifier images visually show guests exactly what they're adding to an order—a swap, an extra side, a different cut of chicken—before they check out. And hand-drawn illustrations of each storefront, created in-house by its design team, went up on Serve as soon as the feature became available, giving every location its own visual identity online. For a brand built on scratch-made food and careful plating, giving guests that same sense of care on-screen was essential.

02

A checkout that doesn't get in the way

Even with a fully custom look, ordering still feels familiar to guests, as it’s the same easy-to-use, conversion-optimizing flow perfected across the 800+ restaurant brands that use Olo for online ordering. Passwordless checkout, plus support for Apple Pay and Google Pay, removed friction from the guest experience, and thoughtful menu imagery and checkout button placement made ordering intuitive. Online orders have grown 114% year over year, and the brand’s online ordering site converts visitors to orders at a 53% rate—well above what it understands to be typical for the category.

03

Fewer tickets, faster iteration

Serve is included with Olo Ordering, so building this level of customization didn't add a line item. It's also self-service: the team can easily set up new modifiers, banners, and menu updates on their own in minutes, without opening a support ticket every time. That control lets the brand iterate faster and build a deeper understanding of what's possible on the platform—the same hands-on approach it brings to everything else on the menu.

We're very particular about how things are presented, so having control over details—the images, the layout—matters to us as much as anything else on the menu. With Olo, we have an ordering site that lets our unique brand shine, highlights our food, and converts browsers to guests more effectively.
